HENDERSON, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Vance County Sheriff's Office says the search for a missing 2-year-old boy has come to a tragic end.
Rescuers found the boy's body submerged in Kerr Lake about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday..
Family members told deputies the child was last seen in the yard on Water Front Drive in Henderson before he disappeared. They called the sheriff's office about 20 minutes after realizing he was missing.
Investigators searched the house and the surrounding area. They then called for additional help to search the lake, which was only about 100 yards from previously searched areas.
The sheriff's office said it used underwater drones and other water-rescue resources. During the water search, first responders found the submerged body of the missing child. The boy's body was taken to a hospital.
The child's identity is not being released at this time, the sheriff's office says.
"The Vance County Sheriff's Office expresses our most sincere condolences and prayers for the family," Sheriff Curtis Brame said in a statement.
