City of Raleigh gears up for another round of winter weather

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- As another winter storm makes its way to the Triangle this weekend, city officials in Raleigh say they're prepared, from police to fire, to transportation.

"Only travel if absolutely necessary," Raleigh Police Lt. David Davis said.

Last weekend was called a "dress rehearsal" by some first responders, as fortunately, they say there weren't any major wrecks throughout the city. But safety is top of mind as some roads remain slick with icy spots.

"That can present a challenge if snow falls on top," city transportation assistant director Steve Halsey said. "But looking forward to this coming weekend with the forecast of snow falling, we anticipate being able to hopefully push the snow off the road and treat the roads with salt."

Halsey said for some crews, this is the third consecutive weekend of working to keep the community safe.

"It becomes very challenging where people haven't had a break, and they're tired and certainly coming into this weekend, that's our biggest priority, is making sure our staff is in good spirits and rested and best they can be going into potentially another long stretch of days of work," Halsey said.

Last weekend was more of an ice-related event, but Ryan and Sara Stone are familiar with these conditions and say they're driving safely as they head back to Pennsylvania on Friday.

"Take it slow," Ryan Stone said.

"I think leaving space between you and the next car. So that way, if you can't stop, you're not hitting the next car in front of you," Sara Stone said.

The message is echoed across the Triangle: stay off the roads if you can.

"I'm basically staying home," Jim Sarantos said. "Minimum travel time."
