Raleigh student charged with misdemeanor secret peeping

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A student at Enloe Magnet High School in Raleigh has been arrested and charged following an incident reported on campus earlier this week, school officials confirmed.

Raleigh police said officers responded to a reported sexual offense at the school around 1:04 p.m. Monday.

John Nghia Gurganus, 18, of Raleigh, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of secret peeping.

In a message sent to families, school officials said the incident happened on Monday and was reported to a teacher. The teacher then notified a school administrator, who shared the information with the school's resource officer, prompting an investigation.

"If you know it's not right, don't do it. Because you never know the magnitude. It could affect you. I just want the kids to be smart and make better decisions. So, it won't affect them in the long run," parent Sal Perez said. "When we were in school, we had different things that we were doing. But I don't feel like it ever got to this."

It is not immediately clear within WCPSS policy about the punishment that Gurangus will face. The length and type of punishment depend on the severity of the offense. The Gurangus family and their attorney both declined to comment on the allegations.

School officials said Gurganus was disciplined in accordance with Wake County Public School System policies and that the school is fully cooperating with law enforcement.

Grandparent Donnie Faison had this to say after learning about the charge.

"You've got to understand when you do things, it is really detrimental. A lot of the situations that are happening on school grounds and just in general...they're not really grasping that there are repercussions for your actions and things will happen. And it follows you throughout life."

"I'm glad that the school is informing us about it instead of just keeping it like private. Because something like that needs to kind of be known."
