CARY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A large turnout gathered Sunday as the Ramakrishna Vedanta Society of North Carolina hosted its annual Durga Puja celebration at West Cary Middle School.
More than 1,300 people were in attendance, including Morrisville Mayor TJ Cawley.

The celebration, which honors the Divine Mother, exceeded its registration goal and served prasad (lunch) to all who came.
Cawley commended the society for bringing together people of all faiths in devotion and unity.

The event featured worship and music led by priest Shri Pravin Shukla ji, devotional songs by the Vedanta Choir, and offerings from children of the Vedanta School.
"This celebration is rooted in the principles of respect for the divinity of motherhood and the sanctity of womanhood," said Dr. Samrat Das, President of RKVSNC. "We are deeply grateful to West Cary Middle School and the Wake County School District for making this sacred occasion possible."

Organizers also gave back to the community, with enough food donated after the event to serve approximately 300 people at a Durham homeless shelter.
RKVSNC serves the community through devotional, educational, and service programs inspired by the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda.
