Preparing for storms, severe weather now: Hurricane Season

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring multiple disturbances off the North Carolina coast for possible development in the coming days. This comes as we near the peak of hurricane season.

There are now two areas off the coast to keep an eye on. The first area is Tropical Storm Dexter. This is now the 4th named storm of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season. This tropical storm continues to move away from our coast and does not pose a threat to land.

According to NHC, a weak surface trough, currently located several hundred miles off the southeastern U.S. coast, is expected to develop into an area of low pressure within a day or so. A tropical depression could form later this week or into the weekend. Initially, the system will move westward but is expected to turn northward by the weekend.

* Formation chance through 48 hours: Low (10%)
* Formation chance through 7 days: Medium (40%)

We're now entering the busiest stretch of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. The peak of hurricane season is in September, but August, on average, is a busy month for tropical activity.

Make sure you have a plan in place before the peak of the season.
