DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Loved ones of Capt. John Lyon are preparing to lay the 92-year-old trailblazer and Korean War veteran to rest.
Family members said Lyon's legacy was defined by perseverance, turning obstacles into opportunities throughout his life.
Lyon was one of the first African American firefighters hired in Durham in 1958. He was part of a groundbreaking group known as the "Original Ten," who reported to Fire Station 4 and helped integrate the department.

His son, Reginald Lyon, said he watched his father build a brotherhood that transcended race.
"When you walk into a building, they didn't have the masks and technology you have today. They had to hold their breath, hold hands, and search as a team. You didn't get out unless you worked together," he said.
Lyon's death comes as the Durham Fire Department continues to face scrutiny about hiring practices and diversity.

The department is nearly fully staffed at about 95%, but its ranks remain largely White. Current figures show approximately 80% of firefighters are White, 15% are Black, 4% are Hispanic, and 1% are Asian.
Fire officials said efforts are underway to better reflect the community they serve.

Fire Chief Robert Zoldos said Lyon helped pave the way for generations of firefighters and that his impact continues to be felt today.
"He was one of the original 10 that joined the fire department when there were only White male firefighters. That group blazed the trail for everyone who followed behind them," Zoldos said.
That legacy continues through firefighters such as Battalion Chief Shawn Walls, who has served with the department for 18 years.
Walls said he is proud to stand on the shoulders of Lyon and carry his legacy forward.
When asked what he would say to him today, Walls said, "Thank you. Thank you for just paving the way."
Lyon was the last living member of the Original Ten firefighters. He died of natural causes.
Lyon's memorial services will be held at noon on Saturday at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Apex.
