RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Wake County man who was arrested in connection with the death of an infant nearly two years ago made his first court appearance.

The investigation started on Oct. 28, 2024, when deputies received a report of an injured infant taken to a hospital. On Nov. 1, the baby died from her injuries.

Earlier this month, investigators obtained an arrest warrant for the baby's father, 25-year-old Christopher Gonzales. He was charged with murder.

Gonzales was taken into custody on Tuesday and processed into the Wake County Detention Center.

Wednesday afternoon, he made his first court appearance. Gonzales' wife, Selena, was in the courtroom in support of her husband. She declined to comment after the hearing.

Gonzales remains in jail with no bond. He is scheduled to return to court in about three weeks.

"On behalf of the entire agency, we extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the victim's family and all impacted," Sheriff Willie Rowe said. "I want to thank the WCSO investigators who continued to work this case to provide answers and make way for justice for even the youngest victims in our community."

The sheriff's office said the child's death is an ongoing investigation.
