
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Making sure your students are fed and energized for class is a priority for Wake County leaders, and that starts bright and early in the cafeteria.
ABC11 spoke with Tiffany Lawrence, director of child nutrition services for the county, at Lake Myra Elementary School as year-round students finished their breakfast. She shared what traditional calendar students can look forward to this year, including a more protein packed breakfast and healthier snack options.
"If you see a Pop-Tart or chips, it's not the same item that you see in the Walmart. It's going to be a whole grain Pop-Tart," Lawrence said. "And if you see chips, there's going to be a baked chip. It's going to be a lower sugar ice cream."

Parents should note that breakfast prices have increased by $0.25 this year: $2.25 for high school students and $2 for elementary students. Lunch prices are now $4 for high schoolers and $3.75 for elementary students. Families needing assistance can apply for the income-based free and reduced lunch program or benefit from the Angel Fund, which helps students who fall behind on meal payments through community donations.
Lawrence also encouraged parents to check the WCPSS website for menus to stay informed and avoid surprises.
"Remember that we do spend a lot of time and effort in planning our menus," Lawrence said. "We really want to please... our students. And so, we spend a lot of time thinking about what they like, what they enjoy."
