FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. (WTVD) -- As the countdown to the first day of class continues for most Triangle school districts, teachers are working hard to ensure students have a successful return to school on Monday.
One of those educators is Kimmie Tomczak, a first-year teacher at Willow Spring High School.
A 2026 graduate of NC State University and Wake County Public School System's Future Teachers Program, Tomczak will teach chemistry and physical science during the 2026-27 school year.
Tomczak said she always knew she wanted to be a teacher.
"I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. That was first and foremost what I wanted to do," said Tomczak. "My family really instilled service and giving to others, and so this was what I wanted to do. It didn't matter what I taught."
"In terms of the chemistry background that I have, chemistry was one of those things in high school that really puzzled me," Tomczak said. "It's the first thing that I really felt challenged by in school. Giving students the opportunity to feel the struggle, feel the challenge, but not feel overwhelmed by it is really what I wanted to do."
Tomczak said she toured Willow Spring High School four years ago as part of her teaching program. Now, she is back as a teacher.
ABC11 wishes Tomczak and her students a great first day and a successful school year.
