The Duke of Edinburgh was born on June 10, 1921. At the time his title was Prince of Greece and Denmark. As a young child he had to flee Greece because his uncle, King Constantine I, abdicated the throne amid political turmoil, according to his biography on the palace's website.
Prince Philip served in the British Royal Navy as a young man, including active service during World War II. He married then-Princess Elizabeth in 1947. His wife ascended to the throne in 1952.
Prince Philip has performed countless hours of charity work as a member of the royal family. He worked with more than 700 organizations over the years.
In 2017, it was announced that the prince would be retiring from royal duties.
