ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Two men were rescued from a trash truck, creating an unusual and scary situation on Tuesday morning.

Those WLOS spoke with on the scene believe the men may have been sleeping inside a dumpster that was then emptied into the truck. Fire officials say it's unclear how they wound up in this situation.

Putting their specialized training to the test, crews used repelling techniques to hoist the victims to safety then transferred them onto stretchers, to be taken to the hospital.

The driver of the trash truck says he's seen someone jump out of a dumpster before when trying to empty it, but never has he had someone get trapped inside his truck.
