DURHAM (WTVD) -- A Jordan High School football player, who's the son of Shaw University's Head football coach, is at the hospital recovering after being seriously injured under the Friday Night Lights.

Brandon Massey suffered a broken neck. He is a safety and linebacker for the Jordan Falcons.

Massey underwent surgery Saturday morning. Jordan High sent out a tweet Saturday evening saying the surgery went okay.

Shaw Coach Robert Massey showed up to the Bear football game Saturday afternoon as his son was recouping in the hospital. Students say he showed incredible strength to support his team.

"I interned for the football team last year and me and coach Massey, we're close friends. And I'm just so sad about what happened to his son," said student Destinee Williams.

"It's just sad you know what I mean, it's shocking actually. Shocking for someone who has a football team and participating in stuff like that," said student Justin Williams.

Brandon is at WakeMed receiving care. He is said to be in good spirits and surrounded by family.

Head Varsity Coach LaDwaun Harrison says you never want to see something like this happen to a good kid and good student.
