2 dead, 7 injured in Asheville shooting, police say
Officers responded Sunday morning to the 250 block of Biltmore Avenue.
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- Asheville police are investigating a double homicide and multiple-victim shooting that left two people dead and seven others injured Sunday morning.
According to police, officers responded around 2:20 a.m. to the 250 block of Biltmore Avenue following reports of shots fired and multiple victims. When officers arrived, they found several people suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite life-saving efforts by officers, EMS and Asheville Fire Department personnel, two people were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Seven additional victims were taken to Mission Hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released details about the extent of their injuries.
Detectives and forensic technicians responded to the scene and collected evidence, including numerous shell casings. Police described the area as a large crime scene.
Investigators said preliminary evidence indicates the shooting may be connected to a prior gun violence incident.
During the investigation, Biltmore Avenue near Short Coxe Avenue, along with portions of Short Coxe Avenue to Southside Avenue, were closed. The roads have since reopened.
