NC deputy, K-9 teams deploy to Venezuela after devastating earthquakes

NASH COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A North Carolina deputy is joining international relief efforts in Venezuela following two devastating earthquakes that have affected millions of people.

Deputy Jack Thorpe was requested by Rescue Response International, the sister organization of Haiti Air Ambulance, to assist with emergency response operations after the earthquakes struck north-central Venezuela.

Thorpe is deploying alongside K-9 Joey and Joey's handler, Athena, a member of the North Carolina Troopers Association K-9 Unit. The team will work with K-9 units from Canada and other first responders supporting search and rescue efforts.

Officials said the earthquakes have affected an estimated 13.5 million people, prompting a large-scale humanitarian response.

Colleagues said they are proud of Thorpe, Joey and Athena for answering the call to help those in need as recovery efforts continue in Venezuela.
