NC DMV ending extended morning hours at 90 offices

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The NC DMV is ending its extended morning hours at 90 offices.

The agency says the funding has dried up.

That means offices will no longer be opening up an hour early to help alleviate high demand for driver license and ID services.

The offices will now open at 8 a.m.

The news follows the DMV shortening appointment waiting periods from 3 months to a week.

NC DMV Communications Director Marty Homan said the move allows for appointments to be seen throughout the entire day and shortens the wait time for walk-in customers, who make up more than 85% of DMV customers.

There were no long lines this morning outside of the Avent Ferry Shopping Center Driver License Office, but making appointments remain a challenge for some customers.

"I was waiting for this appointment for, like, six months," Saikiran Nomula said.

He added he drove at least twenty miles today for his appointment.

"I think we need to improve the number of appointments that they handle," Nomula said.

Misti Cantu said the shortened appointment availability helps. Customers can now make an appointment a week in advance with new appointment slots released each weekday.

"Catching up to the point that we can actually schedule appointments, that we can be seen on time, we'd be able to help," Cantu said.
