UNC football signee arrested
WAKE FOREST, N.C. (WTVD) -- Ravenscroft High School graduate and UNC football signee Avery Edwards was arrested Thursday on felony larceny charges in Wake County.
The crime happened on May 23, although the details of what happened are not known at this time.
Edwards is one of two tight ends signed by UNC in its 2014 recruiting class. UNC head coach Larry Fedora has been made aware of the arrest.
"Avery and his parents met with me earlier this week to inform us of the charges," Fedora said in a statement to ABC11. "I believe Avery is a good kid who made a terrible mistake. We are just a few weeks away from welcoming the majority of our incoming freshmen to summer school and this is disappointing news. Avery and his parents immediately made our admissions office aware of the situation and we are working with them on the proper protocol moving forward."
Edwards caught 45 passes for 629 yards and seven touchdowns during his senior season at Ravenscroft HS in Raleigh.
In a statement to InsideCarolina.com, Avery's parents wrote: "This is an extremely difficult time for our family... Avery has a bright future including plans to attend his dream school, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on a football scholarship in the fall. We are heartbroken that our son - a solid student and talented athlete - has made a mistake of this magnitude. He is deeply sorry for his actions, and he has returned the items to the owners and apologized. This is an unfortunate situation for everyone involved, and we hope the matter can be resolved in a fair and reasonable way. Avery was released on unsecured bond and is at home."
