One person dead after brush fires burn for hours in Johnston County, officials say

CLAYTON, N.C. (WTVD) -- One person is dead after a series of brush fires broke out Friday in Johnston County, authorities said.

The fires ignited near Byrd Road in the town of Clayton and burned for much of the day as multiple agencies responded to contain the flames.

Officials have not released details about the victim or the circumstances leading to the death.

Authorities say the incident remains under investigation.
