CHAPEL HILL (WTVD) -- High water from a water main break closed part of downtown Chapel Hill early Tuesday morning.
Just before 5 a.m., authorities in Orange County were called about water rushing down E. Rosemary Street near Spring Lane, between Henderson and Hillsborough streets.
Nearby residents were told to "keep in place" inside their homes due to the high amount of water in the area.
Orange Water and Sewer Association crews were able to shut off water valves around 6:30 a.m. after at least two water mains - a 12 inch and a 6 inch pipe - broke. It is unclear what caused the break.
Crews are currently assessing the damage, including a large hole on E. Rosemary Street. It is unclear when the road will be reopened.
About 10 families on Spring Lane have no water due to the incident. Crews have said it may be about 6 to 8 hours before it is restored.
Drivers are urged to use Franklin Street as an alternate route.
