HICKORY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Police say someone broke into a mausoleum at a North Carolina cemetery and stole the skull of World War II veteran.

Investigators said in a news release that a city employee noticed damage to the mausoleum Wednesday morning in Hickory and called police.

Authorities say James William Floyd's casket was opened, but only the skull was taken. A funeral home is keeping Floyd's remains until the mausoleum can be fixed.

WSOC-TV reports Floyd fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was honored with a Bronze Star.

Police are investigating the theft of the skull, and no arrests have been made.

Floyd's obituary said he died in July 2008 at the age of 84.
