When it's finished, the bridge will have an extra lane in each direction. The bad news is the work will take months to finish.
Drivers can still access the All American from Morganton, they just can't get across. Detour signs lead the way around the construction zone.
For the next two weekends, the freeway under the bridge will close from 10 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday so the beams supporting the bridge can be removed.
When it's open, more than 50,000 cars a day use it.
