The teenager was taken to Wake Medical Center.
Police have not made any arrests in connection with the shooting and no weapon have been recovered.
Authorities said it was too early to tell if the incident was gang related.
Teen shot during altercation
RALEIGH
It happened in the 3400 block of Macinac Island Lane around 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Police said when an altercation between two groups broke out in the 3400 block of Mackinac Island Lane, 16-year-old Emmanuel Wooten was shot in the back.
