The collision happened around 2:30 p.m. at the crossing on Barbee Road just northwest of Morrisville.
Authorities say Boone's car was on the tracks when the train came through the crossing, but it is not clear why his car was there.
Officials say the crossing arms, lights and bells were working properly.
The Norfolk Southern freight train was traveling from Raleigh, and its load included seven locomotives and 11 freight cars. It is still being determined how fast the train was going.
