The Army says a Special Forces officer from New York has died several days after a training accident at Fort Bragg.

In a news release sent out by the base Thursday, the Army said 34-year-old Capt. Juan E. Lightfoot of Elmont, N.Y., died Sunday at Womack Army Medical Center.

The release says Lightfoot was injured during pre-scuba training on Dec. 8. The incident is under investigation. Details about what happened weren't given.

Lightfoot commanded a Special Forces detachment in Company C of the 2nd Battalion of the 7th Special Forces Group.

He was a former Marine who joined the battalion last month.

Lightfoot went on multiple deployments as a Marine Corps officer to both Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan).

Lightfoot is survived by his parents, Denise Carter and Damian Gennino of Elmont, N.Y.
