2 Fort Bragg soldiers killed in Afghanistan

FORT BRAGG, N.C.

Officials said 39-year-old Capt. Scott P. Pace, of Brawley, Calif., and 25-year-old 1st Lt. Mathew G. Fazzari, of Walla Walla, Wash. were killed Wednesday.

The pair died in Qarah Bagh, Afghanistan after their helicopter crashed after taking fire from insurgents.

Both Pace and Fazzari were assigned to the 1st Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.

Pace was 39, a West Point graduate, and veteran of two earlier deployments to Iraq.

Fazzari was 25 years old and on his first deployment after graduating from Gonzaga University in 2010.
