One week after teen takeover, Raleigh police keep watch in key areas
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- One week after a violent teen gathering led to multiple shootings and arrests in Raleigh, police maintained a visible presence in areas affected by last weekend's unrest.
Officials said thousands of teens first gathered in Brier Creek before moving to Glenwood South on the evening of the Fourth of July. Several shootings occurred between the two locations.
On Friday night, Raleigh police arrested a teen they believe fired a gun at vehicles in Brier Creek during the incident. Police said additional arrests are expected.
Reports circulated online about a possible teen gathering at Triangle Town Center on Saturday. A few Raleigh police officers were present at the shopping center, but no large gathering materialized.
In Glenwood South, normal street closures were in place Saturday night. The area also appeared to have a slightly increased police presence.
Last weekend, thousands of teens descended on Glenwood South after midnight, resulting in several shootings and arrests.
A group of women in Glenwood South on Saturday said they were present during last weekend's gathering and were hesitant to return. They said they thought twice about coming out on Saturday and planned to leave the area early because of what they witnessed the previous weekend.
Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce said Friday that he wants greater police visibility throughout the city.
