Police looking for gas bandit

WENDELL, N.C.

The investigation began when the manager of a family-owned gas station in the 2900 block of Wendell Boulevard did an audit of gas sales. The audit showed 338 gallons of diesel fuel was missing.

Detectives checked video from surveillance cameras and saw an anonymous looking white van parked over the store's underground storage tanks an hour after it closed.

A few days later, a police officer spotted a similar van parked over tanks at a Sheetz station just up the road. He went to find the driver but couldn't.

The warrant says surveillance video from the Sheetz showed a man running away. Police seized the van. The warrant says when they looked inside, police found a hole cut in the floor, two large storage tanks, and siphoning equipment.

Wendell police said they are still investigating and have not made any arrests. The warrant said detectives have traced the van's owner.
