NC State junior guard Terry Henderson will miss six to eight weeks with torn ligaments in his right ankle, the school announced Saturday.

Henderson suffered the injury during the Wolfpack's season-opening loss to William & Mary on Friday.

"Obviously, this is a big blow to Terry and our team," coach Mark Gottfried said in a release. "I feel badly for Terry. He worked extremely hard to get ready for this year. Our team has to adjust and we will need some young players to step up."

Henderson sat out last season after transferring from West Virginia. He averaged 11.7 points per game for the Mountaineers two seasons ago and was expected to be one of NC State's leading scorers on the perimeter.

With Henderson playing only seven minutes Friday because of injury, freshman guard Maverick Rowan stepped up in his place. Rowan finished with 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting and will likely get Henderson's spot in the starting lineup. Sophomore Cody Martin and freshman Shaun Kirkalso will see an increase in minutes with Henderson out.

NC State opens ACC play against Virginia Tech on Jan. 2, which is right in the middle of Henderson's timetable for return.
