SAMPSON COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- One person died Tuesday afternoon after their vehicle crashed into Coharie Creek in Sampson County.

The vehicle crashed into the water about 2:30 p.m. after veering off US Highway 421 near Martha Lane, north of Clinton. It went down the embankment and was submerged in the creek.

First responders pulled the vehicle, a 2007 Ford SUV out of the water. The driver, Donna J. Pearce, 77, of Clinton, was found dead inside the SUV.

A dive team from Wayne County was dispatched to help in the effort.

Speed was not believed to be a factor, the State Highway Patrol said Tuesday evening. Pearce was wearing a seat belt.

The Highway Patrol is investigating.
