Teen killed in Orange County crash

MEBANE, N.C. (WTVD) -- The North Carolina Highway Patrol says a 16 year old died Wednesday afternoon in a single-car crash.

It happened just before 3 p.m. on Lebanon Rd. near Mill Creek Rd. in Orange County.

Troopers said Desmond Piccini of Mebane was driving a 1989 Ford Mustang east on Lebanon Rd. when the car travelled onto the eastbound shoulder.

Piccini apparently overcorrected, causing the car to cross the center line onto the westbound shoulder, where it hit a rock wall and overturned.

Piccini was killed. A passenger in the car - 16-year-old McCray Williams of Graham - suffered minor injuries. He was treated and released from Duke Hospital.

"He was very very blessed to have survived the wreck. I don't really see how anybody could have survived it," said eyewitness Carolyn Lewis.

Troopers believe speed played a role in the crash, but the investigation is ongoing.

Witnesses told ABC11 the teens were street racing.

ABC11 archives show that Williams was also a passenger in another fatal car accident in January 2013, that killed two other teenagers. That crash also involved alleged street racing.

Piccini was a junior and baseball player at Eastern Alamance High School. The school says it will have counselors on hand for students as long as necessary.

Piccini's close friends and teammates planned a vigil at the school Thursday evening.
