DEER PARK, Texas -- A truck driver from Texas says he was heartbroken to see an American flag wrinkled and abandoned on the side of a Nebraska highway and decided to do something about it.

Jake Gridley says he was driving his 18-wheeler off Interstate 80 near Q Street in Omaha when he spotted Old Glory lying in the grass, KPTM-TV reports.

Gridley turned his big rig around on the interstate before slowing to a complete stop.

"It became my responsibility to take care of that flag," Gridley said.

The trucker wrote about his experience on Facebook. The post has since gone viral with nearly 70,000 shares.

Gridley says his actions-and the comments he's received since stopping off that interstate-have made him feel a greater connection with his country.

"It shows that the American spirit and the face of our country is still there," he said.

He told KPTM-TV he is still deciding what to do with the flag, which now rides shotgun next to him in the truck.
