Last month, Sgt. Gottlieb was reassigned to a different position within the department, but it's unclear whether the move is a result of the internal investigation.
Sgt. Gottlieb is one of several defendants named in a civil suit on behalf of the former defendants in the Duke Lacrosse case. Collin Finnerty, David Evans and Reade Seligman were charged with rape after an exotic dancer said she was attacked at a party.
The charges were dismissed after the State Attorney General declared all three men innocent.
Their lawsuit claims the detective was behind an illegal photo lineup that led to indictments against the three defendants. It also alleges Gottlieb had a history of targeting Duke University students, earning him the unflattering nickname of "Duke Hater" on the campus.
City leaders say Gottlieb's position change is not related to the Duke Lacrosse case or the pending lawsuit.
