9/11 events, observations across central NC
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Friday marks 25 years since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Remembrance events are taking place across the area.
Durham
Twenty-five years after the events of Sept. 11, 2001, the Durham community is invited to come together in remembrance, reflection and unity through the power of music.
On Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7:30 p.m., the Choral Society of Durham and the Durham Symphony Orchestra will present a free performance of Mozart's Requiem at the Durham Armory, which is located at 212 Foster St.
Attendees will experience the work performed by a 200-voice chorus accompanied by a full symphony orchestra.
The evening is intended to honor those lost during the terrorist attacks and pay tribute to the survivors, families, first responders, military members and others whose lives were forever changed that day.
Beyond remembrance, the gathering will offer the community an opportunity to reflect on the resilience and unity that emerged in the aftermath of one of the most tragic days in American history.
Fayetteville
The 9/11 25th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony at the Airborne & Special Operations Museum will take place Friday, Sept. 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 100 Bragg Blvd. in Fayetteville. The event will recognize and remember the sacrifices and courage shown during and after the events of 9/11.
The ceremony will be a morning of reflection, unity and tribute to the nation's enduring resilience. Guest speakers include Lt. Gen. Gregory Anderson, commanding general of XVIII Airborne Corps, and William J. Lehmann Jr., chief of Emergency Medical Services at Fort Bragg and a former FDNY paramedic and survivor of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
The event will also mark the formal opening of the U.S. Army Airborne and Special Operations Museum Foundation Field of Honor, where 500 American flags will be displayed through Veterans Day on the museum's parade field, representing service members, first responders and the fallen.
Cumberland County will join communities across the nation to honor the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The Town of Hope Mills 9/11 Tribute Ceremony will take place Sept. 11 at the John W. Hodges Public Safety Center Monument Garden at 8:30 a.m.
The Fayetteville 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will take place Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at Segra Stadium. The opening ceremony start time is TBD. Participants will climb the equivalent of the World Trade Center's 110 stories in memory of the 343 FDNY firefighters and other first responders who died. Onsite registration begins at 6 p.m. There is a registration fee of $35.
Raleigh
Activate Good's 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance Event will take place Sept. 11, 2026, at John Chavis Memorial Park, where hundreds of volunteers will participate in hands-on service projects, a Community Connections Fair, hear remarks from local leaders and support critical needs across the community. The morning shift will take place from 10 a.m. to noon. The afternoon shift will run from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The 2026 9/11 Heroes Run welcomes runners, ruckers and walkers of all ages and fitness levels to commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11 on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Sugg Farm in Raleigh. The event aims to help future generations understand the significance of Sept. 11, 2001, while continuing to honor first responders and service members for years to come. Participants can also sign up for the 10K Challenge, which features two back-to-back 5K races and rewards finishers with a limited-edition challenge coin. Garner
The Town of Garner is inviting community members to the Garner 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Sept. 11 from 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Garner Recreation Center. The program will feature remarks from local leaders, firsthand perspectives relating to the events of 9/11 and moments of remembrance honoring those who lost their lives and those who continue to serve.
Clayton
The Town of Clayton is hosting the annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Friday, Sept. 11, at Municipal Park beginning at 9 a.m. The event is free to the public. The ceremony will feature remarks from members of the Clayton Police Department, Clayton Fire Department and Johnston County EMS, who will share in remembering the sacrifices made on the tragic day. Knightdale
The Town of Knightdale will host a 9/11 Moment of Silence on Sept. 11 at the Knightdale Veterans Memorial from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. to honor the nation's strength and resilience. The moment of silence will begin at 8:46 a.m., marking the time the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
Fuquay-Varina
The town of Fuquay-Varina will host a short ceremony to honor the sacrifices of first responders and commemorate Sept. 11, 2001. The 9/11 Remembrance Event will be held at Fuquay-Varina Fire Station No. 4 at 8:30 a.m. Additional information about the event can be found here.
Holly Springs
The Holly Springs Fire Department invites the community to a special remembrance ceremony at Fire Station 1 (700 Flint Point Lane), starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11. The 9/11 Memorial Ceremony will be set around the fire station's World Trade Center Memorial, which features a piece of steel from the North Tower.
This year's expanded program includes a display of 343 flags honoring the fallen firefighters from Sept. 11, 2001. Special guest speaker Chris Ward, a Holly Springs resident, Citizens Academy graduate and retired FDNY captain who responded to the attacks, will share his personal reflections. Those who served or lost loved ones during the terrorist attacks will receive a flower to place at the memorial.
