Progress Energy lobbyist crashed under the influence

WASHINGTON

The Washington Post reports the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia said Ashley Turton was in a state of “acute alcohol intoxication” when she crashed into the garage of her Capitol Hill home in the early morning hours of January 10.

The medical examiner’s statement said she died from the “inhalation of products of combustion and thermal burns” when her car caught fire after the crash.

Turton’s husband, Dan Turton, serves as the White House Deputy Director of Legislative Affairs for the U.S. House.

Ashley Turton was a lobbyist for Progress Energy, Inc.

A statement from Progress Energy last month said co-workers were devastated to hear of Turton’s tragic death. She was the mother of three young children.

Turton joined Progress Energy in 2007 after serving as chief of staff for Rep. Rosa DeLauro.

Turton's death and circumstances leading up to the crash are still under investigation.
