Durham's Dillard's Bar-B-Q to close Friday

DURHAM The owner of Dillard's Bar-B-Q -- Wilma Dillard -- tells the Durham News Service that they are shutting down due to the economic climate. The family says they plan to restructure, reorganize and watch the economy.

"It is with a heavy heart that I bring you the news that Dillard's Bar-B-Q Seafood, which has been an icon of Durham, will close its doors for the last time on Friday, March 18, 2011," read a statement on the restaurant's website.

The Fayetteville Street establishment was opened in 1953 by Wilma Dillard's father, Samuel Dillard. Wilma Dillard took over managing the restaurant in 1997.

The eatery is Durham's second oldest Bar-B-Q operation behind Bullock's, which opened a year before.
