McD's hiring push seeks to change 'McJob' image

"What McDonald's is really trying to do is add new part-time jobs at entry level and let the people go from there. There's plenty of opportunity at McDonalds," says local owner Adam Sloan.

Locally, there are about 270 positions available.

The Urban Dictionary describes a McJob as a menial, low-paying, unskilled, dead-end job, including (but not limited to) those in the fast food industry…"

Sloan says McDonald's hiring day is partly to redefine and celebrate the term McJob. "It's gotten a bad wrap in the past," he says.

The idea is that you could be the next Christine Helm. Helm says, "When I first started here I was a crew person. I ran cash register, ran grill, just like the normal person, and then got the opportunity to become a manager."

Or maybe you're the next Tim Sloan. Sloan started in 1967 working the milkshake machine. He paid for high school, college, and now he owns three franchises.

Of the 50,000 jobs available, some are seasonal, some are part-time, but some are managerial and full-time.

McDonald's corporate says the success of the company has lead to this hiring blitz, and they want to redefine a McJob as a golden opportunity for advancement.
