Durham officials outline crime stats

DURHAM

Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez presented the Bull City's crime report for the first half of the year to city council Monday evening.

Lopez said homicides are down since last year, but the number of rapes has increased 29 percent compared to this time last year.

This year, the city has focused on northeast central Durham as a target to reduce gun crime through enhanced patrolling.

Mayor Bill Bell called for the change after a rise in violence last year.
