It happened around 5:20 p.m. in the 1200 block of N.C. Highway 55 East, which is just south of Coats.
Authorities identified the man as 49-year-old John Dailey, of Silvester, Ga.
They said Dailey was 200 feet from the ground when he lost his balance while attempting to hook a carabiner on his safety harness to the tower.
Dailey was an employee of Transmit PM LLC of Duxbury, Mass.
Dailey's body was transported to Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital.
A resident who lives nearby told ABC11 that he had seen workers on the tower for several days.
