WASHINGTON -- Bei Bei, a giant panda cub who lives at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, took his first steps on Monday.
Mei Xiang, Bei Bei's mother, watched his wobbly progress without interference. But once he got all four paws under him, she scooped him up and gave him a big bear hug.
National Zoo officials said now that Bei Bei can walk on his own, he will be able to leave the den and explore the indoor enclosure.
Giant panda fans can watch Bei Bei and Mei Xiang on the National Zoo's panda cam 24-7.
