Cary band director battles leukemia, finds bone marrow match
CARY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Cary Academy's band director Eric Grush is determined to fight leukemia so he can return to teaching his young musicians.
Grush found out he had leukemia this past January. Since then he's been undergoing chemotherapy and spending time with his wife and two children as much as possible.
This family man is not only determined to get back to being active with his kids, he wants to return to working with his band students and being active with his church.
Just this week his resolve to get better was strengthened when he got a text that his brother was a match for a bone marrow transplant.
"That made me feel like, 'ok, if I need a bone marrow transplant, I have that option and I don't have to go through the entire registry,'" said Grush.
While Grush is fortunate to have found a match, he knows not everyone is that lucky. That's why he's encouraging people to come out to the Match Madness event Saturday to join the Bone Marrow Transplant registry.
The ABC11 Match Madness event is at Center Court at the Streets of Southpoint on Saturday.
ABC11 will be there from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The whole process takes less than 20 minutes and involves a simple swab of your cheek.
