Cary 911 center now accept emergency reports by text message
Cary 911 is now accepting emergency text messages. It's the first and only town in Wake County to do so.

CARY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Cary 911 is now accepting emergency text messages. It's the first and only town in Wake County to do so.

The new service is now available right now to all Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint customers within Cary town limits.

All you need to do it just text your message to 911 and be sure to specify your exact location.

"Because of the extra time needed to type and transmit messages, texting should only be used when it's unsafe for you to use your voice to call 911, if you're unable to speak due to an emergency, or if you are hearing disabled," said Doug Workman, Emergency Communications Center Supervisor. "Unlike calls from land lines, neither calls nor texts from cell phones provide reliable location information. Please take the extra few seconds to include your address or closest intersection."

People using the service in unsupported areas will receive a notification and should instead dial 911.

Only texts are accepted -- no images or videos are permitted.

Immediate threats to life and property should continue to be reported by calling 911 when safe to do so; non-emergencies can be reported by calling (919) 469-4012.
