It's no secret that Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel holidays and with that in mind, drivers can expect increased patrols along roadways.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation and governor's Highway Safety Program kicked off "Click it or Ticket" on Monday. During the initiative, which continues until Sunday, law enforcement will step up patrols, and drivers will be fined if they're caught without a seatbelt.

The fines have increased so don't forget to wear your seatbelt this holiday week and always.

Officials say November is one of the months with the highest unbelted fatalities.

That's one reason law enforcement is beefing up patrols on roads all over the state this week.

They've provided some tips for staying safe on the roads this holiday week:

  • Don't drink and drive. Make sure you have a sober designated driver;
  • Obey the speed limit;
  • Keep a safe following distance;
  • Turn on your headlights in the rain; and
  • Put away all distractions including cell phones - it can wait
