DURHAM (WTVD) -- One of the Triangle's most notorious criminals, who grabbed national attention as the accuser in the Duke Lacrosse case, is appealing her separate murder conviction.

A lawyer for Crystal Mangum filed an appeal Monday on the 2013 verdict in 46-year-old Reginald Daye's murder.

Attorney Ann Peterson argued that the jury should not have been allowed to hear evidence about an attack on another man in February 2010. She wants her client to get a new trial.

Mangum maintains that she stabbed Daye in self-defense during a heated argument in 2011.

She was sentenced to almost 18 years in prison.

In 2006, Mangum's false claims against the Duke players made national headlines, but the players were declared innocent after Mangum's story crumbled and her mental stability was questioned.

The Durham prosecutor who championed Mangum's case was disbarred.
