DURHAM, NC (WTVD) -- The woman affectionately referred to as "The Mother Theresa of Durham" will be laid to rest Friday.

Dr. Sharon Elliott-Bynum passed away Sunday at the age of 58 after a battle with lung cancer.

In 2009, ABC11 spotlighted Elliott-Bynum as a Person of the Week. With her sister, she co-founded CAARE INC to provide HIV testing and counseling, plus transitional housing.

For 20 years, she worked tirelessly to provide quality healthcare to the uninsured in Durham. Thursday, Rep. G. K. Butterfield recognized her efforts on the floor of the U. S House of Representatives.

Celebration of Life for Dr. Sharon Elliott-Bynum

Friday January 8, 2016 6:00 p.m.

St. Joseph's AME Church (2521 Fayetteville Rd - Durham)

Public Viewing: 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, family ask that donations are made to Healing With CAARE, Inc.
