18-month-old drowns in pool near Clayton

CLAYTON, NC (WTVD) -- The Johnston County Sheriff's Office says an 18-month-old baby drowned in a pool just outside Clayton Sunday night.

Emergency workers got the call from the 900 block of Lee Road just after 9 p.m.

Deputies said a woman was visiting the home with her daughter. She needed to run an errand, so she asked an adult in the home to watch the child.

A short time later, the baby girl was found in the pool. She was unresponsive when she was pulled out and rescue workers spent more than an hour trying to revive her without success.

The investigation continues.

The baby's name was not immediately released.
