Injured Elizabeth City prison officer released from hospital after failed inmate escape attempt

ELIZABETH CITY, North Carolina (WTVD) -- One of the correctional officers injured during an inmate escape attempt at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution has been released from the hospital.

Correctional Officer George Midgett was released from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Tuesday night.

He had been in the hospital since the Oct. 12 incident that resulted in the deaths of two other correctional employees.

Correctional Officer Justin Smith, 35, and Correction Enterprises Manager Veronica Darden, 50, were killed by inmates in the escape attempt.

Correctional Officer Wendy Shannon and maintenance worker Geoffrey Howe remain at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment for injuries they suffered during the incident.

Ten other prison employees were treated and released.

Members of the Prison Emergency Response Team from other state prison facilities, along with other support staff, are providing assistance to the Pasquotank prison staff.

The Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office, along with the State Bureau of Investigation, continues to investigate the incident.

Pasquotank Correctional Institution, which currently houses approximately 720 male inmates in close, medium, and minimum custody, remains on lockdown.
