Firewurst says its business isn't sustainable with current food trends.

Prepare yourself for the 'wurst' news ... the local chain Firewurst says it is closing its doors following a health report about processed meat.



After three years and locations in Cary, Raleigh, Morrisville and Apex, the family behind the sausage, burgers and dogs restaurant announced Monday that they "have come to the conclusion that our brand is not in line with today's culinary trends and therefore not sustainable."



In a press release, the Morgenstern family said they were gaining traction and showing strong growth this year until World Health Organization's (WHO) report about processed meats "seriously diminished our ability to continue forward with our mission."



"While Firewurst products were made from the finest fresh ingredients, our business suffered nonetheless," the company said.



In October, WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer gave the most definitive response yet about eating too much meat and its relation to cancer - putting processed meats in the same danger category as cigarettes or asbestos.

Despite Firewurst's decision to discontinue their business, the company noted they are not going bankrupt and all employees will receive a small severance pay.



Firewurst will also keep their Bass Pro Shop location open for a short time to honor all outstanding coupons and MyMeister claims.
