GARNER, NC (WTVD) -- Responding to complaints, Garner police are cracking down on drivers speeding on Buffalo Road in the Wake County town.

The 1.5 mile road connects two thoroughfares, Highway 50 and Aversboro Road.

During rush hour, motorists often use the road to avoid backups on Highway 50 but also often ignore the 35 mile per hour speed limit.

Although it looks like the kind of road that might have a 45 mile per hour limit, many of the residences have driveways that connect directly to the road and that's why the limit is set lower.

When asked about his biggest concern the owner of one of those houses, Joe Stroud responded, "Safety. Safety. If I try to back out of my driveway a car could be on you before you know it."

Garner police have handed out more than a dozen tickets during the morning and afternoon monitoring in the past two days.

At least a couple of drivers have been cited for traveling more than 60 miles an hour.

But some of the tickets have been warnings because police say the idea isn't so much to punish drivers as to inform them.

The idea is to prevent a tragedy before it happens according to Garner PD Lieutenant Joe Binns.

"Just the knowledge of what the speed limit is, how they can be safe, how they can get from one point to another without causing an accident or being involved in something," he said.

Binns added, "You know, you leave home, you're trying to get somewhere. You're not trying to be involved in an accident. We just want people to be consciously aware that they need to slow down."
