ZEBULON, N.C. (WTVD) -- When you have car insurance, you expect to be covered in case of an accident. This wasn't the case for one local driver.
The damage to Bill Pressley's car was obvious.
"A bunch of deer on the side of the road, I just tensed up and they all took off except for one. Jumped toward the windshield and hit the side of the car," Pressley said.
Pressley called his insurance company, Geico, but said he didn't get good news.
"She said nothing, no I'm not doing anything for you," Pressley said.
The insurance company said they couldn't help, despite Pressley having comprehensive and collision insurance on the car.
"They were just saying they already paid me $3,500 and they should've totaled it and that the key word, should've, they didn't total it," he said.
Pressley said Geico brought up a claim that dates back to 2015. It was then his 2005 Honda Civic was damaged by a hail storm. Geico paid him $3,500 on the hail claim which covered the broken windshield and dings due to hail.
"You're not salvaging it, and she said nope," Pressley said. He says he was given the check and still able to keep his car.
Fast forward to 2016 and Pressley filed a new claim with Geico after he hit a deer and it caused damage to his Honda. Pressley says an adjustor with Geico told him they would not pay him anything for the damages. Geico gave him a market valuation report and it details how he will get zero dollars for the claim.
"I told her I was going to call my lawyer and she said go ahead, I'm in the right," he said.
Pressley called me first, and then he got a welcome call from Geico.
"He said you know, I put myself in your shoes, and we were wrong, we made a mistake. He said I have been here 25 years and I never had this situation happen, he said we should've totaled it and we didn't, since we didn't, I'm going to give it to you," Pressley said.
He was thrilled as what started at Geico offering him nothing to fix the deer damage to his car, Geico now agreed to pay him nearly $4,000 for the car. Geico did total Pressley's car.
Pressley says he's very happy with how Geico changed their minds.
"Man that's great, thank you," he said.
While Geico worked with Pressley to resolve this to his satisfaction, the rep had nothing further to add on this case.
