Raleigh Diocese reveals opening date for new cathedral
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral received a dedication date Friday, with July 26 announced as the day for Catholics in the Triangle to celebrate as they welcome this gift to the community.
"All of a sudden people are realizing this is real. This is going to happen," said Bishop Michael Burbidge of the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh. "It begins with all of us outside and there are a couple prayers that are said and then the keys are given to me. I open the door and lead everyone into the cathedral for the first time that the Mass will be celebrated."
Burbidge said the cathedral is about 60 percent complete and should be finished in May. And the anticipation is showing.
"We are now at a point where you can walk into the cathedral and go up into the choir loft," Burbidge said. "You can walk down the aisle into what we call the sanctuary. You can figure out where everything is going to eventually be."

Having participated in openings here in the Triangle in the past 10 years, this one is especially important.
"It's an immense project," Burbidge said.
And the announcement came on Facebook -- another milestone in itself.
"So I made my debut, I hope it came off OK," Burbidge said.
