FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Six people and two pets managed to escape a Fayetteville house fire on Friday night, but a third pet was not so fortunate.

About 7:40 p.m., the Fayetteville Fire Department responded to a residential fire in the 2000 block of Ironwood Drive off Biltmore Drive in the Lafayette Village Neighborhood.

When rescuers got there, the single-story, single-family brick home had visible smoke and heavy fire.

Four adults and two children were able to escape the fire. One man suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment.

Three dogs were also in the home at the time of the fire. Two were rescued, but a Chihuahua perished in the fire.

The home suffered heavy damage.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
